when I try to join a MUC room hosted by a remote Jabber server, I get 404 remote-server-not-found. I’ve tried with conference.jabber.org, and with a machine in my intranet. I’ve looked through the configuration settings for something I may need to enable, but found nothing. Any ideas?

I am not sure, but this sounds like a firewall issue. Is port 5269 available to your server?
