Can't get to admin area for Openfire 4.4.3

When I try to get to my admin pages at 127.0.0.1:9090 I get “Error 503: Service Unavailable”. I have checked to see that port 9090 is active (it is) and that no firewall is blocking it. All my Spark clients are working fine – it’s just that I can’t get to the administration pages. I’ve tried other browsers and other computers using the appropriate IP address. It used to work at some point, but that may have been many versions ago. I’m not sure when trouble started but I know the problem existed with 4.4.2 as well. I updated the software to see if that would help. When I attempt to access the administration area from a browser I get this error in the log:

Help?!

What about 9091 port?

No go. Although that port is listed as the securePort in openfire.xml it does not appear to be active. If I browse to it I get a “can’t establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:9091” and if I run netstat the port is not listed at all.

I have not solved this yet, but I was able to go back to Openfire 4.3.2 and the administration area works. So now I’ll try to find out what changed from 4.3.x to 4.4.x. Maybe I missed something when upgrading?
