I’ve just started testing OpenFire. I’ve got it installed and configured (maybe not the best configuration, but it starts) on Debian Wheezy. Seems OK. I have 3 users (including Admin). The users are on Windows and I’m using Pidgin as the IM client (spark can’t use Java 8). Both users can connect, and the web control panel shows both users connected, but neither can see the other in the buddy list. Attempting to manually add as a buddy silently fails. IM’ing each other also fails (silently).
How exactly are you adding buddies in Pidgin? You have to specify a server part, e.g. username@servername. Alternatively you can create a group, add both users to that group and then enable sharing of this group to All users and then both users should see this group and its members.
Using the group, I do see him, and his name matches #2 above.
So, any ideas on what I can check to see why #2 fails?
Edit: Some more experimenting shows the problem. Apparently, at least with Pidgin, when I add a user (using #2), that user must OK me adding him before he shows up. Once he OK’s me, then he shows up. Marking this one as fixed. Thank you again.
Yes, approving someone adding you is a standard way in xmpp. Actually you are allowing someone to subscribe to your presence information (seeing when you are online, etc.). There is the Subscription plugin for Openfire which allows you to switch on an automatic approval of such requests.
