Why not integrate a IAX2 into Messenger client ?
I think would be easy take a look there:

The benefit of Asterisk-IM is that it works with hard phones too. For instance I am using a Polycom Soundpoint IP-600 sip phone, and I am really not interested in using a soft phone.
