When adding users or groups, is there any characters that are considered to be invalid?
_ for example?
Only _ I have is in a staff members email address… could that be a problem?

Follow this other thread where you will find the “formal” definition of the allowed characters: http://www.jivesoftware.org/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=94859𗊋. For instance, white spaces or _ are not allowed.
