Jive Messenger server - frequent down

Hello experts,

Pls help.

I have recently started a Jive Messenger server,

RedHat linux, CPU Pentium III, RAM 256MB, HD 40GB

only ~10 client users,

Psi 0.9.3 on Win XP, Win 2000 etc

Jive Messenger 2.2.2

java 1.5.0_05

up and running for several days, so far so good

but then, suddenly the server hangs without notice,

already several hangs in several days

the only thing I did after hanging was

./messenger stop and then ./messenger start

sometimes fail to start, eventually started again

nothing special can be found from the logs.

no other actions taken.

what can be the cause ???

Thanks.

Are there any exceptions in the log files?

Regards,

Matt

Your OS is about 2 years older than the oldest supported Linux platform for Java (Red Hat Linux release 7.0 is over 5 years old!). I’‘d bet that there’‘s some type of incompatibility with your old Linux system files and the new Java. So I’'d suggest you upgrade your distribution and see if that fixes things with the JVM crashing.

Thanks Cliff !

I am taking over the whole system only recently.

The OS is something I have not gone thru yet.

I’'ll try upgrading the OS and let u know whether it helps.

But it sounds like a big challenge, everything will be affected, isn’'t it ?

Edward

Yes, upgrading an old OS, especially if you’'re not experienced in it, will likely cause you many headaches, and will probably take you a couple weeks to get running smoothly again.

I recommend that you backup your system completely, then format all system partitions and install a new OS from scratch (easy). Once you have your newly installed OS running, then you can tune the system to the way you need it, using the backup as a reference (hard - the configuration files will most likely have changed enough that all your old configuration files will need to be updated to work again).

Red Hat provides some info on upgrading to their Enterprise Linux solutions http://www.redhat.com/en_us/USA/rhel/migrate/redhatlinux/ . I didn’'t read any of it, but it may be useful to you.

Good luck!

My Jive server is randomly crashing also.

Jive 2.3.0

Fedora Core 4 + all updates and patches

seems to run for 2 - 3 days ok, then hangs. I’'m exporting the logs now, so next time it locks up I will post the logs for you.

lcameron, is JM “randomly crashing”, or is it “randomly hanging”?
