it’‘s hard to simulate more than 1000 users using Smack, but if one has enough client PC’'s also Smack could be used to create 100000 concurrent connections.
But the main problem is usually not generating some load but measuring where the bottlenecks are.

Artur, thank you for your valuable insight. I was
not aware of the limitations of windows and after you
post I discovered that XPsp2 will limit the number
connections to 100! I’'m sure that this can be
overridden. Do you know if this limit applies to
their Server or DataCenter editions?
I am almost 100% sure, that this is NOT correct! Yes, there is a max. of 10 new connections per second in SP2 and there is also a limit of half open connections (connections which are not yet confirmed by the other side) but the total limit is still in the tousands I guess its around 65535!
The old consumer windows (win95, Win98) had indeed a limit of 256 connection at any given time.
