Message delivery failure while AD is not accessible

Today I came across a problem - our AD server was busy and was responding very slow.

Users who weren’t connected couldn’t do that and that’s perfectly understandable, but the strange thing was that at the same time messages were being lost - some of them were delivered correctly but many weren’t.

I’m wondering what’s the connection between the AD server not being accessible and messages being lost - isn’t AD only necessary for roster fetching and authentication?

There shouldn’t be a relation indeed. What was the cause of AD server faulting? Maybe it was a network issue rather than AD itself. Then it can explain messages lost.

It was a high load issue caused by old and faulty hardware, there was no network problems and openfire is on totally different physical host.
