MSN users ''never'' login

We’'re running 3.1.1/1.0b5a, and have no problems with AIM/Yahoo, but cannot get MSN to work.

In the registrations on the Wildfire server I see that the various users never login, and if anything is done such as adding an MSN contact, we get:

2006.12.07 11:01:30 [org.jivesoftware.wildfire.gateway.protocols.msn.MSNSession.addContact(MSNSessi on.java:261)

] MSN: Unable to update illegal contact ed_msn@msn.mercury.preferredms.net

2006.12.07 11:01:30 [org.jivesoftware.wildfire.gateway.protocols.msn.MSNSession.updateContact(MSNSe ssion.java:300)

] MSN: Unable to update illegal contact ed_msn@msn.mercury.preferredms.net

in the error log

I can’'t see anything useful in the debug logs, as it seems all fine there:

2006.12.07 11:01:30 … context created successfully, returning.

2006.12.07 11:01:30 msn: contactAdded watsong:ed_msn@msn.mercury.preferredms.net

2006.12.07 11:01:30 msn: contactUpdated watsong:ed_msn@msn.mercury.preferredms.net

2006.12.07 11:01:30 Received presence packet:

Any help deeply appreciated!

Are you adding an MSN contact or a Yahoo contact from within MSN? Because ed_msn isn’'t a valid MSN account. All MSN accounts look like email addresses. Typically an full jid will look like:

ed_msn%some.email.domain@msn.mercury.preferredms.net

(note that this will change in the next beta as we’‘ll be switching to an official standard for the @ in the email address itself, so instead of the above, you’‘d see ed_msn\40some.email.domain@msn.mercury.preferredms.net) Either way, your client should be handling translating this nicely for you. =/ Psi, Spark, and Pandion all have mechanisms that I’‘m aware of that let you say "I’‘m adding an MSN user" and so you enter in their actual MSN email address account and it’'ll auto-translate that to a real jid for you.

Ahh! Apologies, I was being stupid, and had mixed up username/nickname…

BUT the problem doesn’'t go away

I’'m using Spark 2.0.7, so have the nice ‘‘person is on MSN’’ option. When I do get brain in gear and add the account the right way round, it gets added, but the transport never goes ‘‘online’’, unlike the AIM and Yahoo ones that do appear in the ‘‘Transports’’ group.

I’‘m tempted to do a re-install of the whole server, as it’‘s been running since version 2.something, and I can’'t seem to get any decent errors out of the darned thing (except one s I make! lol):

I hate to say this, but you may need to wait for beta 6. =( (should be soon now though!) You may be running into the “can’'t log in bug” (hahaha sigh…)… basically MSN changed some things and I had to update my MSN libraries to compensate.

Darn it!! I thought that might be coming, but had hoped 5a had made it go away.

I’‘m sure that MSN was changed for the good of all mankind, so won’'t complain overly… sigh!

Cheers for the help, I’'ll mark this as answered, and await the next release ( an early xmas present maybe??)

laugh if by the good of all mankind you mean, the torture and suffering of open source developers, then yes, for the good of all mankind. ;D

I am actually hoping to have a beta 6 out … well I’‘m hoping to work hard towards it this weekend. So hopefully early next week! I have no clue yet how many betas there will be before 1.0 but I’‘d rather get releases out and tested than drive hard for 1.0 right now. My hope is that there will be a last beta before 1.0 that is tested and gets very little major complaints, then I’'ll try to fix all the issues and package up a 1.0 and all will be right in the world. =D
