MUC client accessing openfire

I am developing a jabber client for muc using a python library. That client connects to my openfire server on localhost. I manage to connect a user to the server and it appears in the admin console as online. However, I try to connect to the muc and send a message but the admin console shows the muc as empty.

I am wondering if I am not using an incorrect jid when trying to access the room. I am trying to join:

As the Group Chat Service Name is set to ‘‘conference’’ in openfire, should ‘‘conference’’ appear somewhere in the jid of the room?

You should use the room_name@conference.servername

That server name should be shown on the front admin console page.
