Nickname showing up as JID?

Running Openfire 3.4.5 using LDAP authentication with Novell eDirectory and shared rosters. We have about 20 users where their nicknames show up as their full names in the Spark 2.5.8 contact list. However, we have one user who’s nickname is showing up as his JID, username@openfireservername.com When I look at his account from the Openfire server, his nickname is marked as null while all the other users have the eDirectory full names populating the nickname field. What would cause this to happen?

OK, I removed the account in question and readded it (I disable ldapgroupprovider because of issues I’ve had with it in our environment.) but I’d still like to know why it did that.
