Openfire Server Instability Issues

We’re running OpenFire 3.6.4 on Windows 2003, using the embedded HSQL DB (HSQL Database Engine 1.8.0), supporting about 500 simultaneous users. We’ve recently started experiencing some instability issues which render the product unusable and require a service restart in order to recover. When the problems occur, new users are unable to login, and users who are already logged experience unreliable transmission of chat messages (I might type and send something which you’ll never receive).

Recently, we turned on debug logging, and have also made the JVM memory config change as defined here -* http://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/documentation/install- guide.html#windows*

Have others experienced this same issue? Are we on the right track? Is there something specific which we should be looking at?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Greetings,

What is the state of the server when Openfire starts misbehaving? Is the CPU pegged, memory exhausted, disk IO thrashing?
