I am new to linux as well. I am wondering if upgrading to 3.8.1 will help me in any way.

I’m not seeing java heap errors in this log (only some problems connecting to the database). 3.8.1 has some fixes for memory leaks, so it can help. Or you can try disabling PEP in 3.7.1 and check if that helps (adding the system property xmpp.pep.enabled and setting it to false). Also you can try increasing the JVM memory a bit (http://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/documentation/install- guide.html Custom Parameters section).
