We are running the Openfire version 4.0.1 on Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS with OpenJDK 1.7.0_95 installed. Server has about 5GB RAM and 4GB is dedicated to java. This does not happen every day or every week but happens often to be a concern.
I’ve setup this system to use ldap for authentication. I am not sure if this has anything to do with it but thought I should mention it.
Do you have any solutions/tricks to help us out here. Any suggestion/comment is welcomed.

What kind of clients are used?
How do they connect?
Does it affect a particular type of client / user, or all?
When problems occur, what happens exactly?
Can the problem be reproduced / triggered?
What’s in the log files (both client as well as server sided)?
Does log files of the operating system contain any information of interest?
