Upgrade and change database, what first?

Hi all ,
I want to upgrade openfire (3.8.2 to 4.1.6) and change Database (HSQL to MySQL) .
What is better option? A. upgrade openfire and later the change the databse
or B. Change Database and later upgrade openfire

I think both will be tricky to do and it doesn’t matter where to start.
