Upgrade procedure on debian?

I’m running openfire v3.6 on debian and want to upgrade to the latest version. I downloaded the 3.6.4 deb file from the website and performed the following: I set the JAVA_HOME variable then ran dpkg -i openfire_3.6.4-1_i386.deb. It complained about directories not being empty. If I delete those entries then I would essentially be doing a fresh install. Wondering if there is a method to upgrade that would use my current settings, ldap integration, etc. Appreciate any help for the best process to do this upgrade.
