Ok so I just installed openfire 3.5.2. and ran in to an issue. I have set it up to work with AD and LDAP. The last section asks you to add and test a admin users. I have done so and the test completed with out any errors. But when I go to log in it tells me it fails. Also I attempted to locate the following file and did not find it in my installation jive-messenger.xml …

jive-messenger? Was this in the documentation? It should be /conf/openfire.xml now.
The test admin just needs to be a username and should not contain any special characters or spaces. The settings file that contains the LDAP information and authentication information is called openfire.xml. Your admin user must be contained within your baseDN you created.
