Dhcp lan with nas and 3 pcs with win xp

I have a NAS in my home for extra hard drive.

First question: Is it possible to install openfire on NAS to run independently while the Spark clients jump online at any time?

I installed all the files for Openfire onto my NAS. Perfect. It worked. However to run the server, it wants to make me load the server from a client computer. In case you want to check it out, I have the TS-209 2 Bay Storage Unit. Not the pro version.

Second Question: If it is possible to run the server off my NAS, how can I do so?

The computers I have are all Windows and one of them is WINXPPRO. I have all the updated software for both versions of the software. I double checked on that. Much thanks in advance.

First question: Is it possible to install openfire on NAS to run independently while the Spark clients jump online at any time?

Except for the NAS: Yes, thats how it works.

Usually a NAS is not capable of running anything besides his own small system to manage the storage and the network. A NAS is not a server designed to run anything except storage.

In this case it seems your NAS is capable of running some more things, but at least the short description looks like it’s running only its own provided software. Unless you get him to accept foreign software no way and then if it might still be loads of tayloring

What does it run? A fully grown Linux/BSD? Do you have SSH access?

128 MB RAM might be a little low for Openfire AND the usual work your NAS does.

http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=83

These are all the features from the website.

They do not mention anything about running your own software on the NAS. There is SSH accessibility, but I doubt that this is a “normal” fullsize OS.

So I would tend to say: Nope, no possibility to run anything else (which includes Openfire) on it except for what they serve you.
