Either you have your login credentials set incorrectly, SQL Express is not set to allow inbound connections (windows firewall and/or Express settings to not allow connections), or wrong JDBC driver is being used (I have no idea if the SQL Server JDBC driver will work with SQL Express).

Honestly, if you are usuing SQL Express, perhaps just try using the embedded database (H2 i think, or maybe it’s HSQLDB) since it will perform about the same and is known to work well. I don’t know how large you can scale with the embedded database, but if you’re going to be supporting a lot of users, then you should use a real database such as SQL Server, MySQL, etc anyways.
