Seems like
Openfire 3.6.0 Alpha (not sure about other versions) have a bug with plugins which don’t implement Component.
Try to reload MotD plugin from web interface and you will see warnings in warn.log:
2008.04.28 16:32:55 Error unloading plugin genome. Will attempt again momentarily.
Interestingly that the bug doesn’t occurs then implementing Component.
