Find users!

Hey all,

Some of you may have noticed a new feature in the forums – you can now search for other users. To try it out, visit:

Next up, I need to add some more profile fields so that we can all have more interesting things to search on. Feedback on the new feature is definitely appreciated.

Thanks,

-Matt

Hi Matt,

I really wonder why I should search for users in a public forum. Maybe if I’'m new and want to find a forum administrator or if I want to send some nice emails around.

There was a time when more profile fields like Location, Occupation, Homepage and Biography did exist. One may want to search for some of them. Also a XMPP field was available, I’‘m sure that I don’'t want to search for it but to get it displayed either within the profile or on the search result page.

Probably a field / link for the (?)upcoming frappr map (threadID 19754). The Online Users list does contain the country, one may want to search for it.

LG,

We’‘ll re-enable the profile fields soon. Once we have more profile data out there, the search feature will be more valuable. We see it as a way to find people similiar to yourself or to find an expert. Say you’'re a large company and you have forums deployed internally – being able to find other colleagues who program Java and work in the same town is pretty nice.

Cheers,

Lol Bill,

Say you’'re a large company”, well every human con be considered to be one

and you have forums deployed internally – being able to find other colleagues who program Java and work in the same town is pretty nice” and sounds more like magic as they will likely have no access to the internal forum.

So if one owns a public java forum one may want to have the possibility to let the users register with a complete address etc. like other b2b forums do. But I really wonder for which fields one wants to search … company / domain / experience … anyway as you said without profile fields searching is not valuable.
