I just learned that if I put asterisks around text it makes it bold. Are there other formatting shortcuts out there?

Actually, i think i vaguely remember knowing about using asterisks to make it bold. I’m guessing this was part of initial implementation of https://igniterealtime.atlassian.net/browse/SPARK-1150 which was never completed. Maybe not, maybe it was there from the beginning. But i don’t know of any other markup tricks.
I just found this because I had the same question. After a little experimentation, I’ve found that it uses the same formatting as WhatsApp.
Backticks for code formatting. Asterisks for bold. Tildes for strikethrough and underscores for italics.
The 2.8.3 client didn’t include these features but the 2.9.4 client does.
So it happened somewhere in there.
