I have been fustrated since our proxy server was upgraded from fedora core 4 to fedora core 6 and my spark can no longer see the remote openfire server I connect to. The administrator has opened port 5222 on the firewall. In fact the firewall settings are identical to the old server which had worked fine. Please any suggestions?

Spark does not use a proxy server for the XMPP connection, it is only used to download plugins and some minor other things. So I wonder if this is really related, or is your proxy server also your router and firewall?
Does “telnet jabber.org 5222” (jabber.org = a random remote xmpp server) work or do you get a connection, a timeout or a reject?
