I removed the URL field from the registration page.
After receiving the email with the registration link one can still register as usual but there is no way to enter the URL during registration. So one needs to view and edit the profile, hopefully this makes registration for seo-spam users less interesting.
I did also disable a lot of new accounts with gmail/yahoo/hotmail addresses and (suspicious) URLs.
