Hosting Clients?

Hi,

I read several threads back in 07, but nothing recently so I thought that I would ask.

I’m a small business IT Provider. And I’d love to be able to provide them all with a service like spark+openfire. Can you support multiple clients/hosts/domains on a single machine?

Thanks

David

not easily. to support multiple domains you need a way to unify the domains to one LDAP source (e.x. ADAM). This then becomes the source of your users. You would then need to have the ability to segregate the domains so they do not see each other unless allowed.

Hi David,

you can run multiple instances of Openfire on one server. Each server will run in its own JVM and thus you may need a lot of memory on your host. And you need a unique IP address for every instance of Openfire.

Tell me if I’m incorrect here…

If there was only one domain (My domain), you could seperate each client into groups and that would keep the clients somewhat segreated from each other… It would provide the same solution…

I’ve installed it on a test box, and am working through the piece of software… So far that looks like I’m correct, but feedback would be great.

Thanks

David

Hi Davifd,

putting users in clients does indeed seperate them a little bit. Take also a look at http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/plugins/packetfilter/readme.html - this plugin allows you to seperate groups completely.

Do you have users in LDAP/AD? This makes the user management more easy as you don’t need to care about the users in Openfire.

Hi David,

It is very good to hear that someone else has the same need than I have.

I post this today : http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/199430#199430

I work in a small IT Provider from Curitiba Brazil and I have the SAME NEED.

I want to provide IM like a service from my company to my clients.

Do you obtained success?

I already use packet filter and I can manage with who the people can talk.

But, how do this with groups? Do you know?

Another question is my clients want to manage their own contact lists. How to do this?

Thanks

Hamilton

David,

I was looking for more about the subject and I found this:

Raptor, traffic control plugin

http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/docs/DOC-1644

It can be an option to Packet Filter.

Bye

Hamilton

Hi,

the packet filter does supports groups: “Group - All groups defined on your server. The source (or destination) will match if the sender is a member of the specified group.”

Thanks for info, Just what I needed.
