How can a client manage custom groups?

Hello.

I have a question if a client can create his own custom groups? I have tried to create a group with miranda and pidgin and place some contacts in there but after logoff, logon the contacts disappear. I have read some discussion on this forum and it seems to me that spark client can manage groups but what about the others? I have openfire server 3.6.4

Any help would be appreciated.

I have tried with Exodus and Pidgin and i was able to create local groups, add contacts and those groups were preserved after a client’s restart.
