Insert images using XMPP?

We use Pidgin at work and would like to insert images in our chat conversations but we are finding that the option to insert images is greyed out. I googled and found that apparently the XMPP protocol doesn’t allow for such images to be inserted. Is that still correct today?

I’m hoping all it takes is to add a plug-in for the option of inserting images to work!

Openfire just recently got a HTTP-Upload plugin, which will do that job.

Edit: By the look of things, it might be that the plugin has not yet been released.
