Interop with ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, AIM?

The features list does not list modules that can interop with the other popular networks.

Do these modules exist?

Hi,

The server does not currently support server-side transports that access these networks. We are recommending that people use client-side solutions at this time. We are committed to interoperability and as soon as other networks allow open standards access to their networks we will implement a bridge. Currently the best hope is XMPP/SIMPLE. SIMPLE bridges would theoretically allow us to access IBM/Lotus Sametime and MSN Messenger networks (standardization is currently under discussion). In the meantime we have to wait and see if the big IM networks will open up or remain closed.

Why wait?

Can’'t you take the approach of jabberd modules?

Several free servers have gateways to the big IMs.

Several free servers have gateways to the big IMs.

These gateways are always “rouge gateways” that don’'t have permission to connect to the other IM networks. So, there is always a game being played where ICQ/MSN/Yahoo change their protocols to block gateways, the gateways have to change their code, etc. Additionally, the services will simply block any IP addresses that serve too many gateway connections (hence gateways client-side seem to be a better option if you need them).

Of course, all this will change when the large providers open up their networks and allow official interoperability (as Iain mentioned).
