Jive as a support chat tool

We are looking to provide sales support to our customers via an online chat option. Jabber was suggested to us. The point would to be to add a “chat now” button on the web site that would connect to a sales reps IM here at the office. Is Jabber suited for this? Is it overkill to put in a Jabber Server? Is the client a program on a users computer, or can it be a part of a web page?

You’‘ve come to the right place. We’'ve built a set of extensions on top of XMPP to provide exactly this functionality called Jive Live Assistant. It consists of an extension to Jive Messenger that provides queuing and routing functionality as well as client applications for support agents and users on the website.
