Linux build failure

Machine: RHEL 7.9
Smack 4.4.4 codebase
Gradle 7.3.1

When I do a gradle clean in the 4.4.4 directory, it downloads quite a bit of software, but then fails with:
A problem occurred evaluation project ‘smack-android’.
Could not find method compile() for arguments [org.minidns-android21:[1.0.0, 1.0.999]] on object of type org.gradle.api.internal.artifacts.dsl.dependencies.DefaultDependencyHandler.

Not sure why the android sub-system is being built on a Linux machine. Also looking on Stack Overflow says the compile , runtime , testCompile , and testRuntime configurations were removed in Gradle 7.0. Do I need to use an older version of Gradle to compile the codebase?
