Is it possible to find out another person’'s roster using smack (or otherwise in jabber)? Are these things open?

I don’‘t know of any protocols to view another person’'s roster. However, there is a roster exchange protocol so that you can send roster items to other users. Gato has actually been working on a Smack extension for this protocol that should be available in final form soon.
You could probably build on top of the roster exchange protocol faily easily in order to be able to ask someone for their roster (rather then them having to initiate the send).
