The work submitted in this JIRA - http://issues.igniterealtime.org/browse/OF-418 has now been merged onto Openfire trunk and should be available in the latest binary release.
We’re currently writing our own pluggable roster item provider, if anyone else can help testing this functionality that would be much appreciated.
