Presence when contact not in group

If a contact is manually added their presence information only changes when you log out of your Jabber client and log back in. The Openfire administration console shows the correct presence. If we add this person to a group with sharing, their presence updates correctly. We want to use groups to have people automatically added to rosters, however we also want to allow people to add other contacts if they wish.

Any suggestions on how to get this working ?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this, or at least determine if this is a bug or just a configuration issue ?

It seems quite similar to this issue : http://www.igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/JM-702

At the bottom of this thread they say :

“The best solution is to change the default subscription-status of LDAP-users to SUB_BOTH”

How can I do this ?
