Spark will not connect to the server

We had a power outage for probably half a second. It brought our servers down and our entire Openfire down as well. When everything was booted back up, everything but the Spark application came up and working correctly. Whenever I try logging into spark, it states this:

Can’t connect to server: invalid name or server not reachable

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both spark and openfire because that is what our reboot instructions tell us to do, however this does not work anymore.

Please help.

I think this is most probably a server problem and not Spark. Are you able to login to your Openfire’s Admin Console? Maybe its database got corrupted during the outage, so the reinstall won’t help as the database is still the old one. Btw, what database are you using?

After working around a bit I was able to login to the Admin Console, but the Database was set up at this company before I had been added on. The previous guy who was working on this knew the location but hadn’t told me before he left and left no evidence of where it could be. We have backups of our configuration before hand, if I used that openfire.xml file would it connect to the correct database now or no? I believe that we were using an Active Directory, but not entirely sure.

Restoring openfire.xml won’t help if database is corrupted. You can check the openfire.xml file and see what database it is set to connect to. E.g.

org.jivesoftware.database.EmbeddedConnectionProvider

means it is using the embedded database.

If you are able to login to Admin Console, then maybe this is not a database issue. Do you see anything in Openfire’s logs? Are you logging into Admin Console remotely or directly on the server? If you can login remotely, then the server should be fine. If not, maybe that’s your network what is at fault (some switch or router). Can you ping the server with Openfire from Spark PC (if ping is not blocked by firewall)?

I’m able to connect remotely. I just don’t have access to the database. Is there some way that I could get all the information off that one database and instead put it on an embedded database so therefore I can access it from the Admin Console?

Have you checked your openfire.xml for database information?

Have you checked Openfire’s logs?

These are the errors closest to the time of power outage.

So, what about the openfire.xml? (asking for the third time, you are not helping to help you…)

An exception occurred while trying to make available the admin console via HTTPS.

Could not start admin console server

java.net.BindException: Address already in use: bind

This is usually caused by Openfire running twice on a server. You said hat you have reinstalled Openfire (weird procedure to fix crashes btw). Maybe you have left something from the older Openfire behind, like Windows service (if this is a Windows installation) still running and maybe you are now launching Openfire with a launcher and so it conflicts with a service. This might also be the cause of the whole server not working correctly. Check if you don’t have several Openfire processes running at once. Check if you don’t have Openfire service running already. Run TCPView or netstat on a server to check what is using 9091 port.

It looks like you are using MySQL, but i’m not sure (that’s why i ask for the info from openfire.xml). I wonder if it is installed on the same machine, or maybe it was also rebooted because of outage, even if it was on another machine. I don’t know of a way to dump the MySQL database info and then put it into an embedded database as embedded database is text based one and is not really a regular database. And even if this was possible, if main database is corrupted, then there won’t be use of it. I guess you don’t also have database backups (as you don’t know what database you use and where it is)? Restoring a backup would be the correct procedure in this case.

The second error is puzzling. It seems that it is trying to connect to a database on some ‘host-name’ host. But it couldn’t find this host (though it probably worked before the outage). It seems that this outage has affected more than you think and some networking is not working correctly now (server can’t find other machines). But i can’t help with that. Especially if you don’t know how exactly it was setup. If there are no backups, i’m afraid the easiest way would be to build everything from scratch than trying to figure out it blindly via forums. But you should think about the backups and some common UPS measures to avoid this situation in the future.

Okay, so we fixed it but what we ended up doing is that we had an old import file of our users. So we used the plug-in ‘Import/Export Users’ to get them in there and instead of trying to connect back to the original database, we ended up using an embedded one so that if the server were to go down again, Spark shouldn’t have any problems rebooting.

The problem ended up being that we had a PostGreSQL database that no one but our second to last IT guy knew about; however, he didn’t leave any passwords behind for when the Server would shut down and not boot up.

Our problem was that the server was there and we could try to boot it back up, but we needed a password to actually access any of the data. Spark was looking at this database for our user, but couldn’t get access to it because it acted shut-down because no password was found to boot it back up.
