Sparks users constantly losing connection. Desperate for help

We are currently using openfire 3.6.4 and sparks client 2.5.8, which are pretty up to date versions. However, at least a dozen times a day, every LDAP user is kicked out of sparks with the infamous error -> “Your connection has been closed due to an error.”. The errors that show up in the log in openfire admin console are too cryptic to be helpful for me. I cannot decipher what the problem is.

From previous posts I tried making sure compression was disabled, upgraded to latest versions, and went over the security settings with no luck. IF anyone has had this problem and solved it, I would really appreciate your help. I’m extremely tired of our uses complaining about Sparks. . and I’m desperate to get this fixed.

OK, a few things, assuming that the network is robust…

How many concurrent users?

How much Java memory is used and how much allocated? (Server Information screen in the Openfire Admin Console).

What OS are you running this on? (important if you need to correct memory allocation)

Please post the logs so we can see what you are dealing with.

Cheers,

-Andy

Concurrent Users: A good estimate for us would be anywhere from 60 to 80 concurrent users. But for some reason, on the statistics tab in the Openfire Admin console, it always shows 0 for Current Users, Active Conversations, Packets Per Minutes. The only thing that updates is the current conversations area…

Java Memory: Right now it currently shows 36.4% Used. (23.04 MB of 63.31 MB used) I’ve never seen this variable get critically high…

OS: We are currently running openfire on a virtual server with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP32. We’re using VMWARE, and the original Administrator set this virtual server up with 384 MB of memory. (I realize this seems kinda low, you think i should increase this? If so, to what?)

Memory is something you may have to tweak at some point but with 384Mb and I’m assuming nothing else running on that host I would guess that the Java Memory setting for OpenFire would be the first wall you would hit.

You aren’t running anything else on that box are you?

Could I also ask you about your LDAP Directory? What sort? How many users in the directory (assuming this is far more than the number running Spark/Openfire)? It may be worth going through the list of ldap parameters that you have set too - change anything that you think might be sensitive before posting of course ^^

No, we are not running anything else on this virtual server other than openfire. As for LDAP users, it looks as there are total of 568 users imported. We are using Active Directory off a windows 2003 Domain server. Here are our LDAP settings, I omitted the sensitive info.

Hmm, nothing remarkable there.

Even a fairly lowly specced AD server should be able to cope with a deep trawl of a directory of that size and I notice that you are using 389 so you aren’t even using a multi-domain global catalog search.

No errors in the AD server event log? No resource warnings on the VMWare box running OpenFire (CPU or Memory)? Anything en-route between the OpenFire server and the AD server like a Firewall?

Firewall between clients and OpenFire server?

Do all the connections drop at exactly the same time?

Your right, our network is simple; one domain, one forest. I don’t see any errors in the event log and there has been no resource warnings for that virtual box. No firewalls between clients and openfire or openfire and AD. THe connections all drop at the same time. The only errors we have to go by are the java errors I posted earlier from OpenFire logs.

I PM’d you with some other stuff but have noticed something else.

It looks to me like you have two ldap.vcard-mapping sections pasted into that field and the first one is missing a line at the beginning. It may not be the real cause of the problem but it might not help.

definitely a corrupt vcard setting there in openfire. Also the java memory allocation is a little low. I would increase the amout of memory to the virtual machine and then to openfire.

Ok how much memory do you suggest? Also how do I increase the amount of memory to openfire after increasing the memory the VS? I think I fixed the vcard mapping value, it does not show up on multiple lines anymore.

Find the Openfire server executable, on your Windows install it will be called openfire-service.exe and will live in the bin directory under where you installed Openfire.

Create a text file in this directory called openfire-service.vmoptions

In this file put two lines representing the minimum and maximum amount of heap space you want to allocate as follows…

-Xms256m

-Xmx384m

Restart Openfire and check the admin tool to make sure the changes stuck.

Regards,

-Andy

Andy, I did exactly what you said, but the changes were not reflected in the admin console. One thing I noticed though, is that the shortcut on our server’s desktop that we use to start up the openfire server points to the “openfire.exe” not “openfire-service.exe”. Is there a different procedure when you run your server using this?

Hello,

I have been running an openfire server with spark for years now and never had any problems until recently where i am also experiencing the ‘connection closed due to an error’. This is knocking ALL spark sessions off at exactly the same time.

We ran it linked in with AD using LDAP and thought this was the problem. We only have 15 users and not a big issue to sort out. I completly removed and installed using the embedded database and local users but I am still having this error so proved that it is not an LDAP only problem.

spark error log shows:

I have tried all sorts, disabling the encryption, various server settings and also disabling the idle timer but no joy. It is starting to get irritating now.

Ah Joel, if you haven’t registered it as a service then it possibly isn’t using the openfire-service.exe wrapper.

You need to ensure the .vmoptions file exists and is in the same directory as the .exe. Try calling it openfire.vmoptions and put it in the same directory as the openfire.exe that is being called.

Also, I’m a bit concerned that your monitor plugin isn’t behaving itself. Have you got the latest version? I just installed 1.1.1 on a test server here and that works correctly.

I would suggest testing the server without that plugin whilst it is misbehaving just to ensure that it isn’t a factor.

I have the exact same issue. Spark was runnning perfectly for 4 months then all of a sudden my users are getting kicked off. I have pretty much the same setup. And have tried everything in these forums.

Did you ever get yours to work properly? Anyone?
