Today I have version 4.0.3 of openfire installed on windows server 2012 r2, every time someone restarts the server I need to start openfire manually.
Looking at the changelog, I have seen that the new versions install openfire as a service. If I upgrade to version 4.2.2 will openfire automatically start every time the server is restarted or do I need to set something up?

It will. But you can install service on your version as well (i think the service been there for 10 years now…). Read the Windows Service part http://download.igniterealtime.org/openfire/docs/latest/documentation/install-guide.html
