Since update to Openfire 4.8.0 users started "randomly" losing connections

Hello dear friends,

I have been using Openfire for a very long time, since before the name change. And I never really had any issues, it was working flawlessly. But now, since the update to 4.8.0, users (5 family members, all using Conversations/Android) started periodically losing connections to the server, and it looks like it’s happening at random times. In the Conversations client, under account settings, it shows that they are only, but if I take a look in the admin interface, no active sessions or just partially active sessions are shown, even tough all 5 device lie on my table, all connected to the internet.
If I disable the connection in the Conversation client, and the reenable it again, they are shown as active sessions again, and they receive all the undelivered messages.

Has something essential been changed in the way how clients are connected to the server? This is a big issue for us, because this has been our primary way of communication for the past 5+ years, and now it became very unreliable so we have to fallback to WhatsApp until I figure out what the issue is.

Nothing suspicious in the logs is happening.

If I set up connections from the Conversations client to another XMPP server, everything is working well as it used to be. To this must be server and update related.

Any ideas?

Hello!
Same as here. 8-10 Conversations Android client and Openfire as family / friends communications.
After upgrade to Java 21 and Openfire 4.8.0, then randomly users became offline.I restarted the server and a few hours it works again but after a while offline the clients again. Another issue is that I can’t set the group membership too. I have 4 groups separated. Played with the settings for a few days but no success. I reverted to Java 8 and Openfire 4.7.5 and all functions working well again. Server opsys is Windows 2019 Server on a VPS. I hope, the devs can do something.

How did you revert back to OF 4.7.5? Did you had a snapshot+db backup?
I’d like to revert back as well, but I’d love to avoid reconfiguring everything from scratch.

Uninstalled 4.8.0 then reinstalled 4.7.5 and configured from zero point. I have 10 users and 4 groups, a TURN server nothing else. It takes 10 minutes only. It worth the work and I will never update the 4.7.5 because this is the most stable version. No memory leaks, no issues.

This is a curious and concerning issue. I’ve not experienced it myself (that I know of).

Would you please enable debug logging, and review the logs after the problem occurs again. Openfire should log when it decides that a client is disconnected (even if the client doesn’t share the sentiment). This might provide valuable insights.

Is there any experience of the client disconnection and the roaster problem with version 4.8.1?

In Openfire 4.8.1, a bug with regards to ‘stream management’ was resolved. It is not unlikely that this bugfix affects the behavior that was reported here! My advice: upgrade!

Updated to 4.8.1 and it seems ok. Works with JDK 21.0.2.
How can I increase HTTP File Upload cache lfetime from 6 hours to 24 hours? Is there any config file to edit the cache size and lifetime?

There is no explicit expiry time. By default, the plugin will store the data in the temp folder of your OS. If your OS decides to clean that every 6 hours, then that’s the maximum life time of the data.

The readme file of the plugin describes how a different folder can be configured to store the data.

Thank you for the reply.
I have a scheduled task for restart openfire service at 3:00 AM every night. In the plugin description I have read that every service stop/start clear the cache. I think it’s the cause of the cache clearing. The daily restart task is because of error sending file a few days continous running of Openfire server. Now I disabled the restart task and testing the behaviour of 4.8.1 server.
It seems, that the connection and roaster problem solved with this version.
